This Is Where Leadership Actually Starts

(And Other Things Nobody Tells You About Identity)

Every morning, before the meetings, before the emails, before the noise of the day kicks in — there's a moment. You're standing in front of a mirror. Just you.
What happens next matters more than most people realize.
That moment — the one most people rush through — is actually one of the most powerful leadership opportunities of your day. Because the conversation you have with yourself before you ever say a word to anyone else sets the tone for everything that follows.
Leadership begins in the bathroom.
Identity Drives Behavior
Here's something we teach inside Impact168 that changes the game for people once they really grab hold of it:
You don't rise to your goals. You fall to your identity.
Think about that. You can have the best plan, the clearest vision, the right resources — and still self-sabotage your way right back to where you started. Why? Because your behavior will always find a way to match who you believe you are.
That's why the "I Am..." statements you carry around matter so much. Not the ones you post on social media. The ones running on repeat in your head.
I am not a morning person. I am bad with money. I am not the kind of person who finishes things.
Those aren't facts. Those are stories. And stories can be rewritten.
The Mirror Doesn't Lie — But It Does Reflect
Mirror work isn't a new concept, but it's one that gets dismissed because it feels uncomfortable. And here's a coaching truth: if it feels uncomfortable, you probably need it more than you think.
Try this. Tomorrow morning, look yourself in the eye and say out loud the person you are choosing to become.
I am a focused leader. I am someone who shows up. I am building something that matters.
It might feel awkward. Say it anyway. Repetition builds belief, and belief drives action. That's not motivation fluff — that's how identity change actually works.
Spring Cleaning Your Self-Talk
This month we're talking about clearing the clutter — and most people go straight to the junk drawer or the overflowing inbox. But the most important clutter to clear is the stuff between your ears.
What "I Am..." statements are you ready to retire? What new ones are you choosing to step into?
Because here's the thing about spring cleaning your identity: you don't have to become someone completely different. You just have to start living like the person you already said you wanted to be.
That leader? They're already in there. They've been waiting on you to look in the mirror and agree.
The Work
Leadership development isn't always loud. Sometimes it's quiet. Sometimes it's standing in front of a mirror at 6am, a little tired, a little uncertain — and choosing to speak life into yourself anyway.
That's the work. Simple. Uncomfortable. Worth it.
This week, pick one "I Am..." statement. Write it down. Say it every morning. Watch what starts to shift.
And if you're ready to go deeper on the identity work — that's exactly what coaching is built for. Let's talk.
Make it a Great Day, Coach Chris
