Fire Me!

That’s right, Fire Me!

I often tell my new coaching clients—both youth and adults—that if I’m not a better coach the next time we meet, you should fire me. The first time I said that to a high schooler, he asked, "Why would you say that?" Here’s why: You must first learn to lead yourself before you can effectively lead anyone else.

Growth Is Essential

When I think about great leaders, I see people who are lifelong learners, readers, and intentional in everything they do. They constantly seek growth, and that growth doesn’t stop once you've reached adulthood. The example you set in your growth directly impacts the younger people around you. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or organizational leader, modeling consistent self-improvement sets the tone for the youth watching you.

This doesn’t mean I have to complete a masterclass between every coaching session. What it does mean is that I have to learn something new—every single day. That’s why, I take time to reflect in my planner, answering one specific question: “Today, I learned...” It’s a simple but effective way to hold myself accountable and track the small and large lessons I gain on my personal and professional journey.

The 1% Rule

If I don’t show up as a better version of myself tomorrow—whether as your coach or in any role I play in my relationships—then I’m not upholding my part of the deal. Even if it’s just a 1% improvement, it counts! Because before I can lead others, I must be willing to grow myself. And that applies to all of us, whether we’re parenting, teaching, or leading an organization.

So if I haven’t learned something new if I haven’t taken a step forward in my personal growth... Fire Me. We both deserve better.

A Call to Action for Leaders

But instead of firing each other, I challenge you to hold one another accountable for daily growth. Talk to your family, your students, or your team about what you’ve learned today, and encourage them to do the same. Imagine the ripple effect when every member of your family or organization commits to this kind of intentional growth.

If I can help in any part of that journey, book a complimentary strategy session today. Let’s start growing together!

Make it a great day,

Chris
