Monzingo Press is an independent publishing imprint founded by Chris Hansen in Lincoln, Nebraska. The name is inherited - a family name rooted in one of the most remarkable origin stories in American history, carried across continents and centuries to land here. We publish books worthy of that name.

THE MONZINGO STORY
The name Monzingo is not invented - it is inherited. Discovered through family genealogical research, it traces back to Edward Mozingo, a man from the Kingdom of Kongo brought to colonial Virginia in 1644, who won his freedom in 1672. His name - and his story - survived centuries of American history, passed through generations, crossed the country, and arrived here.
The name itself derives from the Kimbundu word kujinga, meaning "to twist, to wrap" - a birth name. A name rooted in the moment of coming into the world.
The tree in our mark was chosen deliberately. Roots reaching down into where we came from. Branches reaching up toward where we are going. Monzingo Press publishes books that honor both.
